Awareness

Attackers will first study the individual they intend to attack and only select the weakest person who is least likely to be able to defend him or herself.

So it is important to be aware of your surroundings. If some one is staring at you for too long or following you, try to escape or rush to a crowded place where you are likely to get help by shouting if needed. All attackers are cowards who will not attack if they are likely to be caught.
